Problems with American Family Insurance???

I was wondering if there is anyone else out there that has had problems settling a claim with American Family Insurance? I was hit by a drunk driver while riding my bicycle on a sundays afternoon, Sept 24, 2006. My right ear was almost cut off, my head went through the windshield, I was knocked unconscious plus a bunch of stitches in my face. The police officer on site assumed I would not survive the crash which then made it harder to find the police report. The owner of the car was insured by Progressive, she did not have enough insurance to cover the medical bills but the insurance company was eager to pay her limits and did. I had a policy with American Family that covers under-insured motorists. American Family policy is that they will not pay anything until you sign a release. So, no matter what bills you have, it does not matter to them. Now after 2 1/2 years, Am-Fam has paid on that claim, only and I mean only after I hired a lawyer has American Family  done the right thing. I was wondering if there is anyone else out there that has had dealings with American Family and how it turned out.

The spot on the windshield is where my head hit!!!

Hi, have you looked into your home and contents insurer and your auto insurer to see what public liability coverage they might provide you; even though you were out riding your bike? In certain cases, both policy types can actually cover you in this situation.

Cameron, the issue has been with American Family. They are my insurer. I have a Under Insured Motorist policy in my auto policy as do most folks. Am Fam policy is to pay nothing until you sign a release, a decent insurer would do everything it could to take care of you and not cause you finanicial hardship.
